This version incorporates the name lists of variable stars from no.67 to no.76 for the same constellations. The main distinctive feature of the new version is that it provides improved equatorial J2000.0 coordinates for 13446 stars (including those for 5052 stars corrected for proper motions). These are based on identifications with positional catalogs using finding charts and on our new measurements.

The difference between the versions December 1998 and March 1999 consists in the following:

        • All necessary corrections found during this period have been added (more then 80 corrections).
        • In the course of the preparation of a new GCVS 4.2 version we improve coordinates for many GCVS variables, including those from the Name-lists. Please note that some stars of the NSVS catalogue may be found identical to GCVS stars, with their new positions. GCVS identifications are presented in the last column of the file nsvs.dat.

Notice the data of the NSVS version you use!

        • The stars NSV 17813-15 in the current version are not the same as NSV 17813-15 in the December version.
        • We are grateful to GCVS users who inform us about errors revealed in our catalogues.

        1. Our new ftp address : ftp://ftp.sai.msu.su/pub/groups/cluster/gcvs/gcvs
        2. Our new Web address : /groups/cluster/gcvs
        3. Several corrections to the 73rd Name-list of Variable Stars Kazarovets E.V., Samus N.N., IBVS No.4471, 1997: The variable star V 390 Lac is actually NL Lac, this was not revealed because of the then-adopted coordinates for NL Lac being seriously in error. Instead "V 353 Pup = NSV 03431, not 03731" should be "V 353 Pup = NSV 03731, not 03431". < /EM >
        4. We have started preparation of an electronic release GCVS 4.2 which will contain improved light elements, classifications etc. along with sufficiently accurate positional information. The first approach to this project has resulted in improved equatorial positions (B1950, J2000) for variable stars in the constellation of Andromeda, including the stars from the GCVS proper plus the stars from the subsequent Name-lists, with a new standard of positional accuracy, to 1 second of arc. These positions have been incorporated in the present data set.
